Best power bank for TS80P?
« on: September 22, 2020, 02:13:47 am »
Hello,

I see this is a popular question.
I'm new to powerbanks so I don't know too much about them.

I see this question has been asked before "Best power bank for TS80P?"
And the answer was: build one yourself.
I'd rather not...

Is there anything on the market that can match the specifications of the TS80P which are: USB-C, 12V 3A, 30W, QC 3.0 & PD 2.0.

Any ideas?

I was thinking the Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 3 Pro might be suitable.
It has a USB-C output of 12V 3A which matches the soldering iron.

But I'm not too sure about the other specs: 30W, QC 3.0 & PD 2.0
The output of the Xiaomi power bank says 45W max. Would it step down to match the 30W needed for the TS80P?
I understand that QC stands for Quick Charge and PD stands for Power Delivery. I do not believe that the Xiaomi power bank has these features.
Are they necessary?

I'm hoping to get a power bank that works just the same way as plugging the iron into the mains.

OK I managed to find a good power bank that powers the TS80P the same as the mains:
Xiaomi Power bank 3 20000mAh Pro PLM07ZM
Only ~$60 AUD from eBay

There are other benefits:
The cord and power adapter that comes with the 'more' version also charges the battery at optimal speed.
It's as if the soldering iron was made for that particular battery in mind.

Have you tested it?

Bought that power bank based on your comment, but my TS80P won’t turn on at all when connected to it. I’m using the silicon USB-C to USB-C PD cable included with the TS80P, and stock firmware. Are you running the Ralim firmware or stock?

Is there an update on weather the Xiaomi Power bank 3 20000mAh Pro works?

I need to get a power bank for it, but don't want to waste my money if it won't work

Hi there!
After extensive research I ended up buying the CP12S Power Bank by Huawei. ( https://consumer.huawei.com/en/accessories/supercharge-powerbank-40w/ )
It's a 12000mAh Power Bank capable of delivering 40W (5/9/12v at 3A).
I chose this Power Bank mainly because of its size, weight and quick recharge times. I received it completely empty and it took 2 hours to charge it to 100% (via USB-C).
I tried it with my TS80p and all I got was either constant restarts and "Low-Volt" (USB-C) or powering at 5V/3A (15W) via the USB-A port.

So I gave up on it and thought I'll just wait for a firmware fix for the TS80p.

Yesterday, I decided to try some (stiff) USB-C cables I had laying around.
I started with a cable by Choetech. ( https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B074DTB6L3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) To my surprise, it worked perfectly!
Then I tried with another one made by ANKER. Had the same great results.

I even tried with the USB-C cable that came with my DELL Ultrasharp U4320Q and it worked perfectly.

So, as you can see, the original USB-C cable is to blame.
I'm now looking for the perfect flexible silicone USB-C cable and I'm all set!!

P.S.: My TS80p is on firmware v1.27.

I have been looking at the Moshi IonSlim 10000mAh Power Bank. But I can't see the specs of the PD port. Only that it supports up to 30W. Anyone know any other good cheap packs?

The IonSlim 10000mAh can deliver up to 30W via USB-C : 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 15V/2A, 20V/1.5A.

So there's no 12V/3A for TS80p..

The Huawei can deliver 5V/9V/12V-3A, 15V/2.67A, 20V/2A, 5V/4.5A and 10V/4A.

OUT1 is USB-A
OUT2 is USB-C
IN is the same port as OUT 2 (USB-C).

Look for something that can output 12V/3A.

Thanks for confirming. If only I could find find one here. As far as I am aware, this is the cheapest power bank that supports the full 30W PD https://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/cygnett-chargeup-pro-20000-mah-63w-usb-c-powerbank-black/30360512

And that is not cheap :(

It must be quite big, but the specs are perfect.
Remember: if it's not working out of the box, just try another cable. I just ordered Hoco X23 Skilled and X45 Surplus cables. I'll keep you posted about their flexibility and compatibility.

Hi there!

Since I haven't received my Hoco cables yet, i thought I'd try my new Baseus GaN 65W charger with my TS80P.

With the original cable I got the exact same behaviour I had with my Huawei Power bank. It only works with the bundled charger.
The TS80P received 8.8V from USB-C port 2 (capable of up to 30W) and got into bootloop on the USB-C port 1 (capable of up to 65W). As soon as I used my Choetech USB-C cable, everything worked perfectly.
PS: The AC voltage was present on the tip on either charger.

Hi there!

I just received the Hoco X45 Surplus cable and I can confirm that it behaves exactly as the original cable included with the TS80p. It cannot power the TS80P with 12V/3A. As a sidenote, it's not really that flexible..

Still waiting for the Hoco X23 Skilled cable to arrive.

SUCCESS!
Would just like to let you all know that my battery bank finally showed up (https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/buy/kogan-26800-mah-power-bank-pro-102w-pd-and-qc-30-space-grey/) and it works perfectly at 12v 3A. Very happy with the purchase. And yes on the chonky side

When heating I see it pull up to 27w

Also another plus side is that the c-c charging cable that comes with it also works with the iron.

So irons c-c works and battery bank's c-c works

Update:

I received the Hoco X23 Skilled USB-C cable and it works OK with my TS80P and the Huawei Power Bank. But it's just a plain PVC coated cable. As far as I can see, Hoco does not have any soft silicone USB-C to USB-C cable. So I'll check elsewhere for a flexible silicone cable.
