Samsung Syncmaster TC240 AiO teardown & modding
« on: December 10, 2015, 03:52:00 am »
So decided to modify my  All in One computer and add another, bigger and better sata HDD and bigger memory so I can install and use Windows 7 without worries.

Specs: http://www.pcworld.com/product/1413063/samsung-syncmaster-tc240-widescren-lcd-monitor.html

Changing RAM module was no brainer but installing another HDD is pain in the ass. This computer had 4GB SSD with direct plug to IDE originally. Okay so I can just ditch that out of the way but there is no really room to mount HDD  :palm:. So I bolted one 60GB HDD with laptop holding bracket and tested will it even accept any other HDD than that 4GB SSD. Yeah that worked fine but 60GB 2.5" drive is very slow poke drive so I decided why not I couldn't add there another HDD with sata to ide adapter.

Turns out things ain't so simple... Power supply has +3.3V, +5V and +15V rails, turns out my chinese sata to ide adapter uses 12V rail as main power line  :palm:

End result for today:

Had to swap HDD places because adapters are fitting totally different. Seriously there should be standard for these adapters because you cannot mount them on top of each other because holes are not matching and with worse case like I have the angle is also different.
Basically need to add 12V regulator somewhere.

I need beer.

I will try 12V regulator somewhere and continue project.

Had to remove other HDD because accidentally destroyed adapter, flimsy plastic snapped. Bolted LM7812 to board, made some jumper cables to get +12V for SATA to IDE adapter and able to boot up computer. If I have to do this second time I would order adapters from ebay that are not wider or thicker than the drive itself and a mounting kit for two hdds.
