I was recently at the dentist and he had some 45 degree Binocular Loupe with lighting. I ask him about them and he told me they were great from Q-optics and cost about $3k! I thought they would help for most soldering projects, but cost more than a good stereo scope setup. So I went cheap and got these for $41. The working distance seams OK to me, YMMV.

I think they would work well for projects your naked eye struggles with, but not so small it requires a stereo microscope. I have a low end stereo scope but it working distance is very close. Not made for electronic work.
I surprised I haven't heard about using something like this before.
