cheap Kmart AM FM radio teardown
« on: December 16, 2024, 06:47:03 pm »
I assume that the radio IC with its text scrubbed is a multiband 16 pin BK1198 the same chip sold by Jaycar for its cardboard AM/FM kit radio
cheap Kmart radio has good sensitivity on both AM & FM but will go into self oscillation when its two AA calls get low.

From the layout in the photo, I recognize the IC, it's possibly Si4825, or a clone of it. By chance I used the same IC once, for a little toy radio for kids.

The circuit diagram is attached, it's likely that most of the radio portion may be near-identical to the one on your board.

It is quite a nice IC for DIY construction, with zero trimming unlike older radio receiver circuits.
Not great performance, but reasonable enough for a low-cost pocket radio.
