Chip quik alternative?
« on: April 04, 2020, 04:08:53 pm »
Hey,

I've just watched a video of Dave removing an IC with a very high pin count using chip quik solder very easy.  For anyone that is not aware chip quik is an alloy that can be added to existing solder, it has a very low melting point so when heated it says melted for much longer than regular solder. This is ideal for removing processors and things like display connectors.

I had a look online for this product and it cost way more than I'd like to pay, I'd probably use this quite a lot with the work I do.

Has anyone found a cheap alternative to this product?

Have you used this before for mixing with old solder to remove chips. Is it toxic or will it cause any damage to the board?

Yes I did. Wood's metal contains cadmium. But you should be fine as long as you wash hands and don't grind it into dust. With any of such alloys including ChipQuik you should remove it from bard with solder wick, apply new solder, then remove it again before soldering new component. Also you should also do double cleaning of soldering iron tip. That's because mixing low melting point alloy with solder will result in non reliable solder joints.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose%27s_metal look at similar metals table.
