SMTmax reflow oven: AS-6070 Opinions, issues?
« on: August 03, 2020, 03:16:57 pm »
My company needed a reflow oven with large internal area and decided to go with a company called SMTmax ( over my judgement ) , oven model number AS-6070

Does anybody have experience with this specific oven?   Good impressions, bad impressions?

One issue we have right off the bat is their 120V version of their oven uses the same plug as their 240V version.   Both the 240V and 120V versions use a NEMA6-50R plug.  This plug if used in standard way is 1 Ground and 2 Hots, 180 degrees out of phase for total of 240V.   Seems we have to wire our lab with this same plug but with 1 Ground, 1 Hot and 1 Neutral for 120V service, but do not know if the wide blade is hot or if the short blade is hot.   Response from the company's rep to this question is nonsensical and they obviously have no idea about AC power.

Posting here in hopes somebody might have insight into this.

That’s crazy. I mean, what if someone already has a normally-wired 6-50 receptacle in their lab, and when they plug in the 120V unit, it just goes up in smoke...

(That’s why the old “life hack” of using regular NEMA 1-15 plugs for loudspeakers was, and is, a terrible idea: next thing you know, someone has plugged a speaker directly into 120V AC...)

Agreed.

However, does there even exist a 50A 120V NEMA plug/socket?   My google searches have not yielded much.

Its a 3600W oven so for 120V that's 30A, necessitating a higher amperage plug and I guess the NEMA 6-50 was convenient to use for them.  Still we're getting an electrician in there today;  I am envisioning lots of eye rolling.

Really? They’re right in the image in the nomenclature section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEMA_connector

NEMA 5-50
