Getting WIFI for Ethernet-only devices
« on: May 08, 2018, 03:56:56 pm »
Hi,
I have many ethernet-only devices (cameras, printer, Recorders) it is unpractical to wire them all across the house so I am looking for cheaper alternatives to the TL-WR802N, this device works very straight forward, easy Client-mode configuration all in a compact case, without the power adapter.

Do you know any cheap reliable solution? one-board and no plastic case would be even better for me, thank you

most kit doesn't need full network bandwidth - powerline adapters work well in this situation - if you have multiple devices in the one location just add a hub (I have a powerline adapter behind our main tv with a 8 port gigabit switch that will happily do 120-200 MBs transfer to my nas)

The Wifi adapter whatever you use, will need is own power (usually 5V) either from a wallwart or full time powered usb port

eg.The netgear WNCE2001

Ethernet - Wifi adapters arnt cost affective for more than 1 or 2 devices - then you have the added issues if they fail to connect/freeze

tbh the lower cost of newer tech may out wiegh the cost of the adapters

There are some very cheap routers that can run OpenWRT.
Cryptocurrency has taught me to love math and at the same time be baffled by it.

Cryptocurrency lesson 0: Altcoins and Bitcoin are not the same thing.

I've settled on Raspberry Pi as my "Swiss Army Knife" for network connectivity problems.

It's more expensive than the TL-WR802N, factory-new, but I seem to recall Top Loser has sold cheap rpi modules in the past, here on EEVblog.

Maybe something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/TP-Link-AC750-Dual-Band-WiFi-Range-Extender-Extends-WiFi-to-Alexa-Smart-Home/192446235939?hash=item2cceb08523:g:7cUAAOSw5dlaTY8E

It got ethernet port so you can plug device there and the rest of the connection is wireless.

Hi, so far I have been using two TL-WR802N units, this is the right tool for the job, simple GUI, good range and fair price.

Thanks for your suggestions and comments.
