fiberglass pen ESD safe? abrasives & components
« on: March 31, 2021, 08:10:09 pm »
so fiberglass scratch pens, i.e. https://www.newark.com/duratool/d02266/brush-pcb-cleaning-fibre-glass/dp/94T6354

Are these considered ESD safe if you are cleaning the part on a ESD mat with a wrist strap? Say you are cleaning a old oxidized sensitive FET

It probably depends on what you do with the residue from the polishing.

What do you mean? Naturally you would wipe it off with alcohol on a kimwipe.. but during the scrubbing is it making static?

Old fet + scrubbing.. is it going to get damaged? The idea is to clean up the leads so they stick well with solder.

I thought either that, or using steel wool.. which seems safe so long you have a wrist strap on. But it does not come on a nice pen.

How about fine sand paper or scotch brite pad for that regard? Sanding sponge? sand paper glued to a stick? cotton buds?

Just use the fiberglass pen with the component on your antistatic mat (put a sheet of bare metal in between if you’re worried about damaging the mat). Then the component is always essentially grounded, and so is the fiberglass itself as it constantly touches the mat.

I am not sure how well its grounded if there is some kind of rapid buildup, it would need to be connected to ground through a lower impedance possibly. I am wondering if anyone knows if it does
