Teardown of a Mantis-1 from Vision Engineering
« on: August 27, 2021, 10:15:00 pm »
Today I disassembled the Mantis-1 (I guess) which I got for cheap from a dental shop for cheap.
Had a lot of dust inside and I wanted to disconnect the fan and put GU-4 LED's in.

Had no idea these were so basic inside, the optics look relatively simple and available too. Why hasn't anyone cloned this design yet?

Apparently the new ones have some kind of "spinning disk" inside. But I find the old model more than adequate so a cheaper, new option would be great :-//

Chances are it’s one of those things where the devil is in the detail. Large, sloppy optics are cheap enough to make; large, precise optics are hellishly expensive to make. A ton of effort will have gone into giving it a sharp optical path, reducing chromatic aberration, etc. And don’t forget that keeping the optics aligned is critical, so the housing itself is probably quite expensive to make.
