How much would you pay for this workbench (used)?
« on: February 09, 2015, 08:57:44 pm »
I was almost set to buy some lumber and build both a large workbench (for pounding on) in the garage and build a small electronics workbench in the corner of the garage.

Then I found someone selling a used electronics workbench, similar to this one.

How much is a used one like this worth?

thanks.

It's worth what someone is willing to pay.

UK trade price seems to vary between £30 and £150 each, very location dependent as transport costs are high. Also dependent on how many are being sold off at a time. Few dealers touch them due to the size requiring a big storage area.

ok, thanks.  I kind of have to figure out what its worth to me vs. what I can build something acceptable to me for.  Lucky for me the thing is local, so that isn't a problem.  Good to know that dealers usually won't mess with them (at least in the UK) because of shipping/storage costs.

I was just wondering if a workbench that cost $2K  USD 15 years ago is going to be worth $600+ now, used.  If so, I'll be sawing lumber...  ;D
Its just out of my price range for hobby bench in the garage.

thanks.

I built an 8' workbench with a single bottom shelf and 3 adjustable shelves above the tabletop.  Everything is 2X4, the table top is 3/4" MDF and the shelves are 1/2" MDF.  I believe the cost was about $120 or so, including the bracketry for the shelving.  In retrospect, I should have made the shelves out of 3/4" MDF which would have kicked the cost up some more.  I may still do it.  It would be interesting to see what the asking price of that workbench is.  If it is close by, a quick drop by for a visit and some haggling may get it for a decent price.  It will depend on how bad they want the floor space that it takes up.  I would make an offer at $200.  If they take it, great.  If not, get to sawing. ;D

that's kind of what I was thinking. Anything above $200 for me is sort of not really worth it. Considering I would need to buy a buddy lunch and fill up his gas tank or something to haul it.  The lumber gets delivered to the driveway and dumped..

if you want to save money on work bench, just check out craigslist. especially when some companies shut down or downsize, they sell these at really low price.

I got mine for $40 and it comes with outlets and wheels.

I was happy to pay 100€ for a similar size ESD table (180*70cm with one shelf).

It really depends on what you'd be getting. Those type of benches are usually sold as just the basic legs and worktop to start, with everything else being an extra cost option. Shelves above, drawers below, power outlet, lights etc. They end up being pretty expensive when fully decked out. For one similar to what's in the picture you attached, I'd go $200-400 easy, depending a lot on what condition it's in.

I recently replaced my home built bench with a "packing table" from Uline.com.  1000 lb rating, it's very stable and can be fairly chea, depending on the options.

Did you try local Good Will and Salvation Army stores? Some times they have good furniture pieces. Got myself a 5' x 2 1/2' desk, very sturdy for $20 and 2 3 drawer carts for $5 a pice. I only have to build the top shelves from playwood pieces I have laying around.

getting ready to.  To be honest, I'm very happy with a design I have used in the basement for my man cave/ham shack/ recording studio.  Its made out of 4x4 legs, 2x6 bracing the legs (bolted to the legs) and 2x10/2x12 used for the top.  My fat butt can stand on it without it giving/bending, and I made it in an "L" shape with the computer keyboard in the corner of the "L" and the legs elsewhere, so I can roll around back and forth without hitting my feet/knees on the legs.

I was planning to do something similar in the garage when I found the bench in question.
