Is it possible for a soldering station to kill tips
« on: March 21, 2024, 05:10:41 pm »
Good day, everyone. I am a new user with a =n interest in electronics and repair.

My question is, is it possible for a soldering station to kill soldering tips?

I have two stations. Both cheap ones using the C210 cartriges. I will link them below.

One of them is a Sunshine S210.
https://www.sunshinerepairtools.com/SUNSHINE-S210-Smart-Portable-Soldering-Iron-p4384457.html

The other is a GVM T210S.
https://www.exinxun.com/rework-station/gvm-t210s.html

The two companies, GVM and Sunshine seem to be the smae.

So the sunshine one has worked perfectly with the same C210-k type cartrige from the same company for two months now.
But the GVM has had two cartriges fail while using it for two weeks. One was the GVM C210-K cartrige that comes with it and the other a Sunshine branded C210-IS cartrige.

Both cartriges heating elements just seem to burn out. So is it at all possibe the GVM might be at fault or just luck of the draw because I am usding cheap knockoffs and not true JBC ones?

Any feedback will be apreciated.

GVM page states: 120W peak power, rapid heating, 2 seconds tin melting, no difficulty in soldering joints of different sizes.
Sunshine page states: 110W peak power

The sunshine AC adapter is tiny, so I guess its not anywhere near 110W.
The "official" spec from JBC T210 I can find says 20W, but the station is claimed 40W, so probably around 40-50W is what it really should be using peak.

If you have a meter to measure power from the wall you can get an idea of how much these stations are overdriving the tip. 120W could cause it to burn out quickly.

For what it's worth, KSGER C210 Portable is nice, compared to some of the other C210 iron clones.

I've tried a few others, and that one was the only one I found to be really usable, powered from a 12VDC supply such as a bench supply, with 0V connected to ground (i.e. _not_ using any supplied ungrounded DC adapter). The current draw in normal use will be a few hundred mA, but will peak at several amps, especially when touched to a large ground plane, etc.

I can't comment on reliability, since I've only used it for a few months. I don't expect it to be anywhere near as reliable as a decent brand bench iron of course. These cheaper portable irons are maybe best considered as throwaway items after a few of years use (if lucky).

Yes I use the ksger and it works well. If I remember its around 40W at 12V, then if you want to overdrive it you can bump up to 21 or 24V. Supposedly it self limits the power but I don't know how well that works (I posted here somewhere I think).

Its not an all-in-one station but its definitely killer value at $24.
