Benzine cleaner
« on: December 29, 2014, 12:37:54 pm »
In ortder to remove plaster, sticky tape and other glues residue from various household objects, I used to use a product which was filtered benzine, almost no smell and no residue of its own. It would remove sticky tape residue in seconds and leave a clean surface. In the absense of this product some people use lighter fluid, which is heavier benzine and smells and leaves a bit of its own residue. Failing that I have also used unleaded petrol, but that really, really smells and also leaves much more residue of its own.

What I am after is the name of the product that is the filtered benzine made specifically for household cleaning use (and is cheap). Failing that I can buy lighter fluid which even at its cheapest costs £2.15 per 125ml - with that cash I can buy 2 lt of petrol almost, so you see why lighter fluid is outrageously expensive. If anyone knows the name/brand/type of this product, here in the UK, please let me know.

AmazonUK has petroleum ether (aka benzine).
Benzine is not to be confused with benzene or benzyne.
However, I suggest Goof Off, also on AmazonUK.

Where did you buy that from? A newsagent?

I've seen it in a pound shop before.

There are better options out there...
If you knew how toxic that crap is and how many precautions we have to take to handle it.
http://seaworm.narod.ru/2/isgott.pdf
Page 31, in a red frame with bold letters:
Chronic exposure to concentrations of benzene vapours of only a fewparts per million in air may cause leukaemia.
And a bit latter:
"Exposure to concentrations in excess of 1,000 ppm can lead to unconsciousness and even death. Benzene can also be absorbed through the skin and is toxic if ingested. "

Please use something else, like alcohol or a derivative... Not Acetone, that's pretty bad too.

Edit: should have read that better... Benzine is light fuel. It means "Fuel" or "gasoline" in Dutch... So it contains lots of aromatics and should be used outside with adapted glove.
On a side note, I've been using an Acetone substitute for a few years and I find that it works better:
The evaporation is slower so it actually gets a chance to break stuff down. I would not use Acetone anymore outside of an acetylene bottle.

I got the prices from Amazon UK, Zippo Lighter Fluid, packs of 6 x 125ml. Around £2.15 per bottle.

Both benzene and benzine are clear solvents which evaporate, and am not sure which one I had in mind used as a household cleaner. I think it was benzine because it is distilled from oil.

Considering the price of oil and unleaded petrol at the pumps, all these products are very expensive.

I have used unleaded petrol in the past to remove residues from sticky tapes and adhesive labels, but it smells and takes effort to remove the smell after the sticky stuff has been removed (I used isopropyl alcohol).

gildasd -
You are confusing benzine and benzene.
Also, the colloquial benzine in Dutch is different from benzine.
Benzine is petroleum ether.  Look it up.  Wikipedia (cough) has
a good description.  Either way, I would still suggest Goof Off.

Benzine is well known to remove gummy labels.
Wikipedia quote "Petroleum ether is useful for removing the gum
from self-adhesive stamps. It is the main ingredient of some
'label remover' or 'sticker remover' products.

Benzine is a mix of alkanes up to, but not including octane.

Please, nobody use benzene.  This is a different chemical

Foot firmly in mouth.

I'm currently studying for an ISGOTT IMO SMCP exam: I see evil everywhere.
If you say octopus, I might hear octane right now.

A bit late reply.

I got good results using Zippo lighter fluid http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003TTMS7W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Very expensive, again, compared to a litre of unleaded petrol. Basically I pay £1.92 for 125ml - I could also get 2 litres of unleaded .

"Goof off " has very bad reviews on Amazon, and I have no idea what's in it.

Petroleum Ether is outrageously expensive, £22 per litre, 20 times more expensive than unleaded petrol.
