Big clive doesn't use a fancy setup but he does seem to work within the limitations of the camera he uses. I once knew he used a smartphone, someone else has said he used an Ipad. I would try using your smart phone and try to make a few videos. Camcorders are getting hard to come by at the cheaper end and will have limitations in macro close focusing. You'd get some kind of zoom capability but from what little you've said that may not be useful.
A bluetooth selfie stick may be useful as a stand and may provide the remote control to start and stop recording. Kmart in Australia sell them for A$10-$15. So they are cheap.
If you're using the remote because you're in front of the camera then smartphone audio might be sub-optimal. With decent lighting any camera can produce good video. By decent, I mean lighting that is bright and you have control of the shadows.
Try what you have and let that experience guide you.
