Hello everyone,
I'm diving deeper into automotive electronics repair and am seeking advice on proper tools to invest in—not the best tools for all the money in the world, but not cheap, one-time-use options either. My focus will be on repairing dashboards, engine ECUs, airbag modules, multimedia units, soldering out EEPROMs, small processors, SMD components, and connecting programmer wires to boards. My tasks will include reprogramming, key cloning, and fine soldering work.
For the hot air station, I’ve almost settled on the Atten 862D, as it seems to offer good airflow, power output, and reliability. However, I’d appreciate any feedback or alternative suggestions.
Now, I’m looking for recommendations for:
Soldering Iron:
Reliable and precise, suitable for both small SMD components and occasional through-hole repairs.
The main concern I have, based on reviews I’ve read and watched, is the risk of current leakage from the tip, which could damage sensitive components.
Budget is flexible, but I’m looking for good value for money. I’m currently considering soldering irons from Sugon, Aixun, Atten, or Quick, paired with 245, 215, or 110 handles that can use original JBC tips.
Accessories:
Soldering tips (which ones would be the most versatile for automotive work?)
Flux types (gel/paste/liquid) for cleaning and enhancing solder joints.
Solder wire (specific alloys or brands you’d recommend for automotive PCBs?).
Magnifying tools or microscopes for detailed work.
Anything else I should consider for starting with ECU and dashboard repairs?
I’m based in the UK, so I’d also appreciate any recommendations that are easy to source here. I’m searching for equipment that’s reliable and won’t need replacing after just a few months.
I’d love to hear about your setups or lessons learned, especially if you’ve worked on car electronics.
Thanks in advance for your advice!
