Reflow Oven Controller Options
« on: April 06, 2011, 02:09:35 am »
Has anybody had any experience with this product? Looks like a good solution.

http://www.thesiliconhorizon.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66&Itemid=57

Otherwise I was considering one of these, however I'm not exactly sure if I can enter an appropriate profile, still need to look into it capabilities.

Any info is welcome.

Cheers.

Hi, Elektor has published several over the last years:

http://www.elektor.com/products/kits-modules/kits/060234-91-reflow-solder-controller.292759.lynkx
http://www.elektor.com/magazines/2006/january/smd-reflow-soldering-oven.58007.lynkx

They made a full oven too:
http://www.elektor.com/news/elektor-smt-reflow-oven-demo-on-youtube.685023.lynkx

What I dont link about the product in your first link is that it requires a PC and the second one is not really fit for purpose (reflow profile, pre-heating etc).

There are stuff on ebay too
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Reflow-Oven-SMD-SMT-Prototype-8-temp-profile-curve-/220752581622?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3365e113f6

I have seen a board coming out with the colour of carbon and the shape of a crisp from one of these, so keep an eye. I think one of the heaters was faulty and the other one was running at double the power to create stimulous for the temp sensor but also created a very hot hotspot.

P.S. What's up with the marketing on banners 2,8,9 and 10? Do they think their customers are desparate guys? Where is Jeri to rant about it?!

Nothing to lose, they also accept returns. They have also sold one, you can contact that buyer to get a mini review.
Hell, I would set a pizza baking profile too for optimum amortisation.

Seems as though the same seller has separated their product into two listings and have sold about 35 of them. Bit more reassuring

Great, you can make him an offer too, "an offer he cannot refuse". lol

Got to love Chinese-English translators:

"Adopted a high and dependable design"
"Humanized science and technology exquisite article"
"Eqiuped with exhaust fan to satisfy the need of the soldering"

Dont forget to preheat the boards to force out moisture that will otherwise come out fom vias-in-pads or under ICs splashing solder on the board. And post back to let us know if these are any good or we should go back to frying pans.

Here are some internal pics of that oven.
Bought one of these a while ago but hardly used it - just don't trust it to not catch fire or incinerate boards - I use a toaster oven with 'eyeball' control for routine reflow and am also investigating a large commercial pizza oven for larger boards.

Cheers Mike. Good to know. When it comes to value for money the cheap ovens seem to be the best. Think I might commit to building one of those.

Just looking at the instructions for these Omega Ramp/Soak controllers, I think that they would suit the task perfectly. They allow you to enter in an 8 step profile and can store up to 8 profiles. If required you can link the profiles together in a chain of execution or even loop though profiles. They have a thermocouple input and relay output.

Decided to go for the convection oven with a controller and SSR. Bought this Breville Pronto convection oven today. got $60 off the marked price cos it was the last one on display and didn't have the baking tray :)

Thinking of using one of the AC SSR's from Futurlec http://www.futurlec.com/RelSS.shtml
