Warranty on item bought on Amazon

A few days ago purchased a Samsung tablet privately on ebay, from a person who'd bought it from Amazon. The tablet was originally sold January 2015. The person who sold it to me also provided me with the Amazon order number.

I contacted Amazon asking them if I am covered under the item's warranty and how much warranty is left. Rather unhelpfully, they replied that they cannot talk to me because I am not the person they sold the item to, data protection act and all that.

Has anyone got any experience with this? My personal opinion is that the warranty covers the item not the person. If the item has one or two years warranty, it should not matter who owns it.

Any help appreciated.

You would not go through Amazon for you warranty, you would go through Samsung.  Amazon is only responsible to the original purchaser.  Samsung is responsible for the warranty they offer for the product during that life.

Your sale contract is with whomsoever you bought it from so they would have to provide any warranty.

You might well have more luck with the manufacturer, as akis suggests, but the last time I had to do that I needed to provide a VAT receipt to prove the purchase date - not too bad as I was the original purchaser but possibly not straightforward in your case.

I have written to Samsung to see what they say. I am not sure how I could prove that I am the legitimate owner, other than printing out ebay invoices. And even then there is a trail of ownership, why would Samsung bother to verify each step?

So I was thinking a manufacturer's warranty, 1, 2, 3 even 6 years on cars, must mean something. The warranty should be attached to the item, not to the current owner. When you present an item to the manufacturer for warranty repairs they should not need to check who you are, only that the item is still within its warranty period.

AFAIK Samsung does not care about who is original buyer. They'll ask you some document confirming (original retail) purchase in worst case.

And they will know the manufacturer date and if that is still inside the warranty, then the sales date HAS to be.

I have registered the tablet on Samsung's web site with serial number under my Samsung account. Hopefully this will provide me with the needed warranty.

That should be all you need, unless your manufacturer date is out of warranty and you have to prove purchased date.  The other issue you might run into is regionally sold devices if you jumped countries via eBay.
