Some photos from a PeakTech 2170 teardown
« on: February 03, 2013, 04:02:14 pm »
Here some photos of my PeakTech 2170 ... don't seems too bad.

Just some plastic removed ...

Battery holder

It seems that from the soft plastic some buttons where cutoff ... maybe they reused the mould

Internal - the black plastic and display was not removed because there is nothing underneath

Top corner pcb ...

Center of pcb ...

Bottom of the pcb ...

Complete pcb ...

Banana plug receiver ...

That's all for now.

Don't mind if this is my first post from Italy  O0

Bye

Domenico

Thanks for sharing the photos, great first post!   :-+
It looks pretty standard for the meters based on that chipset (Cyrustek ES51919-51920).  Good to see they use 4-wire measurement.
The cheapest to get one of the LCR meters with that chipset is the Mastech that is being sold by one of the members here for $170, but it has some problems related to external power supply.  What did this cost you?
How do you like this meter?  Any problems running off external power?

Yes it comes with kelvin clips :-)

It seems not to be effected by the external power supply problem. I measured some capacitor up to 4700 and some resistor up to 50k and it drift max one count when switching from battery to external power supply.

It seems it will support also power from usb, but i just discovered that the connector has some super glue inside and usb connector does not feet. I will try to clean it next days.

I don't understand why they sell it with only one short lead ... initially I was thinking it was a mistake, but also on the official site the photo shows only one lead.

I bought this over mastech just because is smaller and because it was sort of  ".de" checked ...

Usb seems not to be optoisolated, so for someone this can be a problem.

It is a rebranded Shanghai Yihua V&A VA520B.

Thanks for the very detailed pictures! It seems the quality is very good...

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Hi. I've got Cyrustek based LCR meter, but without usb-connection support.
I would like to upgrade it.
Maybe someone can help me with some components: R46, R49, C46, C47, C51, FB and the IC chip on the right of Cyrustek ES519190. Marking or nominal values...
I would be very grateful.

Did you come up with something since your last post?

More documentation about the PL-2303 can be found here:

No. I did not expect to find that information.
Great thanks for the detailed presentation of the material.
When I have some free time, I will try assemble this.

TY! All components have are found except

  • FB
On sale, I was able to find only FBMH1608HM601-T.
FERRITE BEAD, 0.17OHM, 700mA, 0603
Whether it can be used as a Ferrite Bead?

  • R46, R49
Also it would be great to know more about R46, R49... I can't see their designations in the photo.

I don't own this LCR-meter myself, so I can't tell you more about it...  :-//

Looking closely at R46 on pictures, it looks like it maybe could eventually be marked with 101 or 181.

The ferrite bead doesn't have to be perfectly as in the Prolific schematics, its purpose is to filter out the EMI from and to the USB line. See http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/53391/ferrite-bead-in-usb
Try to find something like that:
  • not to small, something that fit into the pads (0805, maybe more?)
  • rated current of 200mA~500mA
  • impedance (@ 100 MHz) of 30~120 Ohm
For the same purpose, Arduino Leonardo uses MH2029-300Y and Arduino Mega 2560 embeds a part of the BLM21 family.

You should send a PM to the OP of this thread, maybe he could help you?

So

R46 is 100 Ohm
R49 is 200K Ohm

Chip is PL-2303HX so every other component you already found should work.

Anyway if you want one that already has USB you can buy on my store (sorry just a little AD).

Anyone has tested sigrok as software? I will do some a software review (in Italian) next week for this meter ... let see who win.

Great! Can't wait to see it!
I'm very interested in the addition of the Cyrustek ES51919/ES51920 based LCR-meters in sigrok. :-+

Well I tested the "software" and apart from datalogging and some chart it does not offer much. I can't even found a way to specify the COM port.
I think it's worth for any serious application to try sigrok.
Does DE-5000 software offer something more?

@1937

may you check if there is serial data at pin 1 or 5 of the PL-2303 ... maybe is more convenient to drop in one of this CP2102 board you can found on aliexpress. PL-2303 REV.A is not compatible with window 8.1.

Don't know if you can put rev.d of this PL-2303 ... if you remove OSC circuit it may work ...

It is a rebranded Shanghai Yihua V&A VA520B.

Like ALL instruments from PeakTech. And they - usually - ask even more than the original :palm:

PeakTech  :o :scared:

Asking more than original is normal ... you have CE papier work to do and  than you have warranty and support, manual translation, ecc.

I don't think so. An example?

Original Manson HCS-3400-USB = € 278,00 (228,00 + 22% VAT) with CE declaration and italian translation manual (as required by CE laws, otherwise you cannot sell it in EU)

Rebranded Peaktech 1565 = € 329,00 (270,00 + 22% VAT) with the same papiers and manuals.

When I asked PeakTech why I should buy their brand instead of Manson, and if there is any difference between the two brands other than the front panel graphics (if they've requested to use better components, i.e. like NOT Capxon electrolytics) they were offended and stop replying me.

Is this an acceptable behavior of a company that when and if needed, will support his customers? Hmmm....no.

I repeat: PeakTech  :o :scared:

@mcinque

don't know but maybe this is because rce.it buy it from peaktech so there are two (actually three) companies that have to make profit ...

@1937

sorry I'm missing sense of your post: you tested PL-2303HXD (last revision) of this chip?

sorry I'm missing sense of your post: you tested PL-2303HXD (last revision) of this chip?

It was gathered my information.
Components not yet arrived from store. I ordered only the chip rev.A (as it is the cheapest).
Perhaps my post will be useful for those who want to add support for Windows 8/8.1.
I am only interested in support for Windows XP or 7.

I think the chip rev.D should work if remove C48, C49 and XT3.
