TEKTRONIX 465 Oscilloscope
« on: May 17, 2012, 04:58:16 am »
Hello everyone!

I found a TEKTRONIX 464 in prestine condition. There's hardly a scratch on this thing.

The front cover is included as well as the pouch. The pouch contains six TEKTRONIX probes with user's manuals, various accesories, the quick owner's manual as well as the full owner's manual.

I was testing it and it seems like it needs repair. The signals on the display look blurry and out of focus. Everything else works fine.

What do you guys think?

The 465 is an old workhorse, going back to the mid-70s (I.e. 35+ years old) so they are all approaching "boat anchor" status.  The front-end attenuators are deteriorating and almost every electrolytic cap has an ESR up through the roof somewhere, on top of that there are a bunch of Zeners in the horizontal circuits that will be shot--unless it's real cheap I'd pass and find a newer 100 MHz scope from Leader, Kikusui, Instek or the like...

They were a terrific scope, I'd like to see it kept if it was economic to repair, how much did you pay for it?

I got it for free.

A company went out of business and they were getting rid of stuff they had in storage. Do you think it's not worth fixing?

Yeah you didn't pay anything for it so it's worth it.

But the question is how much will it cost to fix.  :)

I don't want to spend too much trying to fix it.

Of it's age it is probably all through hole and so not much effort required but main point are the caps and the display driver plus the zeners

I don't know if they used any proprietary chips but tekfan can step in and tell you

Thanks for the link! It's very interesting.

I'll take a peak inside the oscilloscope and post some pictures, including pictures of how signals look on the display.

Hello, here there are people more knowledgable than me,
you can also sign up on TekScopes yahoo group,
make a search there in the old messages, find the service
manual and ask people for help also there.
For them there isnt an "old" scope so dont ask the
question "is it worth ?", you know the answer they will give :)

The fact that you have original probes is good, depending
what types are, they can be worth more than the scope itself.

If you have time at least it will be a very good learning excercise,
and if you succeed will be an big satisfaction.

It turns out there was nothing wrong with it. I was setting the trigger incorrectly!  :-[
It works pretty well, considering I haven't done anything major to it except clean the contacts. The vertical might be slightly off calibration. I took some pictures of it with my cheap camera.  :)

Good find. Check the electrolytic caps, they're usually the least reliable part.
