One of my ESD leads disintegrated.
« on: February 20, 2022, 08:47:53 am »
I went to vacuum my PC and the  curly cord of my ESD field service kit just crumbled (after a long period of not being used).
I suspected hydrolysis because it disintegrated in the manner that lightweight shoe soles do.
The RS site confirmed the insulation is indeed polyurethane (PU).
I'm in no great hurry to replace it as I don't use it often but the others on RS, Farnell and Desco all seem to be PU too.
Was there any good reason to be PU, eg the ESD ISO standards or PU's place on the triboelectric series?
Are there more robust cords with better insulation material suited to this damp mossy island. I'm surprised the atmosphere is ever dry enough for an electric charge to build up (to paraphrase Stanhope). ;D
The mains plug is broken too at the plastic L and N pins.

Maybe you could use a silicone rubber cable instead of PU?
