What about the HIOKI products...???
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:14:52 pm »
Hello there...

Today I stumbled upon the HIOKI brand, and I think they make some interesting products.

Well, they are a typical small Japanese company, in that they are not interested in "taking over" the measuring instrument world,
so its hard to find a lot of opinions on their products (and the products themselves for that matter).
But they seem to be focusing on quality over quantity, and some of their instruments
(I checked out the Multimeters and the Data-loggers) look pretty good, on paper at least...

Take a look at the 38xx series, and especially the 3801 / 3802.

Also the 7016 signal source/DMM is very interesting...

What do you think...?

From what I know among electricians Hioki meters have a good reputation. They used to be available locally but that stopped about 20 years ago...

Hioki is OK.
My first meter was a Hioki, now 30 years ago, and it still works fine.
It is a typical Japanese company, they make excelent stuff but do not brag about it.
I think they are at least as good as Fluke and last very long.
It is used a lot in the electrical bussines in Europe and Japan.

All industrial equipment manufacturers I know (Fuji Electric, Mitsubishi, Omron, Hitachi etc) from Japan specify one or the other Hioki tester for testing theire equipment.
Why spend money I don't have on things I don't need to impress people I don't like?

Thanks but I'm in the US :) Part of the reason they're not available locally anymore has to do with a drastic change in how test equipment is sold in the US now.

Just purchased Hioki 3801-50 on eBay, new demo meter for only $99 (retails $399)

It should arrive soon.

Thanks for the tip. I went to their site and browsed -- does indeed look like solid equipment. Then I went to tequipment.net to check prices and did a double-take. I wanted one of their waveform generators, but 10k!? Yeep... guess it takes money to get 10mHz resolution over 10MHz bandwidth. But I haven't given up hope: will keep window shopping 8)
