Hakko 936 keep or sell?
« on: May 14, 2020, 06:02:36 pm »
I was going through some boxes that were left unpacked from a move that happened long time ago. Among them I found a still sealed box with the original Hakko 936 and some brand new tips for it that I bought years ago. Now I need to do some soldering for my next Nobel Prize project so I need something better than a general solder I used till now, but generally I do not do 24/7  soldering. Some tweaking here and there. I wonder if I should unpack the station and start using it or sell and get more contemporary something like HAKKO FX-951.
Or maybe for not so frequent use the benefits would be minimal?

He'll probably work fine from those things you want to do. It was good the decade ago it still good today. Of course you want to spend money they're probably better choices today.

I don't have a 936 but I have a couple of 926s and I've had other Hakkos and they're excellent irons. I won't replace that one unless you need something special that it doesn't do or have.

I just saw a used 936 sold for over $140 on ebay. Apparently people have personal attachment to it.

It is really difficult to go back to the 936 or 888 (i own both) after you use the 951.
New style tips are so much better, especially for high power board. It depends on what you need it for.

So it's a business decision and not an engineering one?

If you can sell it for the cost of a new iron that uses the cartridge stile tips then go for it.
