What is the name/description of these connectors?
« on: November 05, 2018, 08:08:40 pm »
I have a few boards with DIP ICs ranging from standard 14-16 pin layouts to the bigger 24-40 pins.  I very occasionally (sometimes only once) need to probe multiple pins on a certain size chip at the same time; If I had multiple IC test clip sizes that would be what I'd want to use.  But they're freakishly expensive for what might be a single use.

What I've been doing is bending some mini grabbers so that they can hook onto the IC pins directly - but they're still rather large when used on 0.1" center DIPs and I know they'll eventually break or short an adjacent pin.  I've been looking at micro grabbers like the one shown below, but they need a single female connector which fits a 0.025" wire wrap type post and my search-fu is failing.  what are these things called so I can buy some?  "Pigtails" brings up bare wire if anything.  We used to have bucketloads of them at the lab but even image search is not coming up with what I'm thinking of.

I did buy two years ago a surplus of HP Logic Analyzers probes that were fantastic in quality and in cost. Today in ebay are selled clones and originals but the price differ a lot

eBay auction: #New-4-pcs-Logic-Analyzer-Test-Clamp-Wire-Hook-Probe-Test-Clip-UK/152513930896?hash=item238289e690:g:HfgAAOSw8nBa4Ulf:rk:1:pf:1

A quick search give me this lot but I no see clearly if contains probes

eBay auction: #Tektronix-P6460-LOGIC-ANALYZER-PROBE-ACCESSORIES-LOT-3/362474345527?epid=1201557503&hash=item5465279437:g:bUcAAOSwteFb2NEi:rk:1:pf:1

I ended up buying these for way less money than the typical logic analyzer leads:

Still have been unable to find out what the female connector is called, in order to search for it; but it matters less now that I've found grabbers with wires attached.   8)

Perfect, exist a lot of grabbers, all work great, some last more than others but all seems ok. Congratulations!

There's a nice comparison of various IC grabber hooks here. I find the cheap clones way inferior, both in holding power and in durability. I find them very frustrating to use, because they will detach constantly. I like the EZ-Hook XKM type and the very similar if not identical ones HP / Agilent shipped with logic analyzer pods. The Tektronix KlipChips are also nice, although their body is a bit bigger. The extra width can make it harder to fit many probes side by side.

These probes are fine for DIP (100 mil spacing) or SOIC (50 mil). The ones in the picture in the first post are for even smaller pitches. Those are under the heading "High-end probes" on the Sigrok page.

I have this:

I can use it in small soic or even in some low pitch tqfp like this

Sorry for the quality of the pictures

It looks like the best name for them is "Molex female crimp termination connector", which I was finally able to track down on a couple of parts sites.  I'll be ordering a handful to go along with my next parts order so I can make pigtail leads for the EZ-Hooks.

Meanwhile, the Sparkfun logic probe leads arrived today, and work beautifully on the DIP ICs I'm debugging now.  Yeah, they're a little cheap but the split grabbers make a solid connection to the pins and the leads are long enough to get clear of the chassis when I attach a scope probe to them.  They also let me tap onto several ICs at once, and take up quite a bit less space than the big spring clip IC testers.
