Title: What is the relationship between OK Industries and Metcal?
Post by: cvanc on June 14, 2018, 01:45:29 pm
These 2 companies seem to somehow be associated, am I right about that?  Did OK Industries *become* Metcal, or did Metcal buy OK, or what?

Will Metcal tips fit my ancient but still great OK Industries SA-251 soldering iron?

Remember the DATSAN brand name in automobiles?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datsun
From 1958 to 1986, only vehicles exported by Nissan were identified as Datsun. By 1986 Nissan had phased out the Datsun name, but re-launched it in June 2013 as the brand for low-cost vehicles manufactured for emerging markets.
In North America, NISSAN was the “new name” (owner) after 1986.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd (Japan) did same “name change” recently
to its most famous Brand Name, Panasonic.

OKI International tried this name change for Metcal ...
the PS-800 was one of first products with new OKI name.  Marketing failed.
Today, METCAL has been recovering its brand identity from this “New Coke” fiasco.

My first car was a 1970 Datsun 510 4 door in a slightly weird yellow color.  Automatic transmission but manual choke and I would have to open the hood every morning in the winter to unstick the butterfly in the carb.  I kind of miss that old beater

Also this OKI making Metcals has nothing to do with OKI Semiconductors (now Lapis) or OKI Electric Industry Co.
