What model is this Weller pencil soldering iron?
« on: January 05, 2024, 02:24:04 pm »
I have asked this in other forums without much luck. Also, have reached out to Weller who asked for some pictures and has not responded since I sent them.

I have this old Weller soldering iron that was issued to me at my first job in the early 80's. It has a lot of sentimental value to me. I was going to order some new tips and the one that is on it currently is attached very well.

What is the model? How can I disassemble it? The heating element looked okay, but there was some sort of ceramic in the metal tube that shattered as I pulled it off.

It looks like you received some info on other forums, but it looks to me like a variant of the Weller SL335:

I say variant because you obviously have a different heater (#127S, 27watt), and similar models were sold under the Ungar name, and we know Weller bought Ungar:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/294394355185?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&srsltid=AfmBOoq_ivPnHG2n5QrcXyY41kf2ZSXlVLzjux0en9zDf3N1fXb0CE3BFYM

They may have changed the design over the years, as yours has black plastic at the base of the shaft. The tips appear to be screw-in and the iron non-temperature controlled.

Is there no info stamped on the steel disc at the base of the heater shaft?

That sure looks close. I had 3 screws holding down the metal part.

Not that I can see.

Update:--------
After doing some searching, I found a picture of the heater and it is the screw-in kind. I am not sure how mine is attached.

This ebay offering looks like the item. Apparently, Ungar sold the same iron with 27 watt, 35 watt and 45 watt heaters. The ebay item shows the 35 watt version, and even has a photo with assembly diagram. I believe you have a #1270 iron. You may not be able to remove the screw-on tip due to heat-corrosion, but I would think that any tip for a 1270, 1350 or 1450 should fit.
