Which DMM?(i promise a teardown/review!)
« on: April 12, 2012, 11:11:07 pm »
Hi,I'm gonna need a decent DMM to do some lab work, and based on Dave's reviews i'm stuck on Uni-T's.My budget currently allows for a 61E -or a 70C or 71C,if they are worth the money.DC and Ohm accuracy is what i most care about, and in a Youtube review the 70 series seemed to address the inner construction quality issue Dave pointed to in the 61D.
So,which one would you pick?

I have the UT-61E ... very good multimeter, better than the 61D reviewed.

I don't know about the others - the quality of the Unitrend multimeters varies from the model to model, depending on who was the designer of said multimeter.
The 61E looks quite good internally (no stupid stuff or flaws) and is great for the price. On the other hand, but if you can search the forums here, one of the 7x series was a not so good design.

Ah yes... here it is, I found it... it was 71D : https://www.eevblog.com/forum/product-reviews-photos-and-discussion/uni-t-multimeter-ut71d-unboxing-and-teardown/

Here's the 61E thread : https://www.eevblog.com/forum/product-reviews-photos-and-discussion/uni-t-ut61e-multimeter-teardown-photos/

If you are planning on using it on a bench you may be better of buying an old mains powered  HP346x 4.5 digit benchtop DMM. It has an LED display so the viewing angle is excelent.  Anyway, last year I bought a mains powered Vichy VC8145 because I needed an extra DMM which didn't need changing batteries after using it for several hours. It has an LCD with backlight so its easy to read. The VC8145 is outside your budget but if you can find the money its well worth it.

Forget the UT71X series. The UT61E looks much better. FYI, I am the unproud owner of an UT71E.

I need a handheld DMM to use on the field,so for now no benchtop HP's(but when i'll afford one,i will!). So everybody is for the 61E?
One last check, any info on the 70C/70D?
else "buy 61E"
end.

Thanks again :)

I have the UT61E and it seems sound.

The only niggle really is that with the addition of an extra couple of buttons it could have had min/max as well as peak and a backlight (the chip supports the extra functions but UniTrend didn't make use of them).

The opinion of the UT71 series is very low on the forum, as has been noted.

so peak shows min/max?i really don't know if settle for the 61E or give the 70C a go,both fulfill my needs and 70C's accuracy and better protection might come handy..and the burden voltage thing...

The 61E is a GREAT deal for its price. Its solid and I tested its rated accuracy for resistance and capacitance. Mine meet and beat its ratings for both of these ranges. You can see the in depth details on pg 9 of the UT61E thread. I have been INCREDIBLY happy with it.

well,i think the resistor network and the trimmers of the 61E eventually got it ;)
