Wire to board connectors
« on: May 01, 2014, 09:36:34 am »
Could someone please tell me if it is practically possible to crimp wire to those tiny board connectors like these: http://uk.farnell.com/molex/14-56-2042/connector-rcpt-4pos-1row-2-54mm/dp/2381185?in_merch=New%20Products&in_merch=Featured%20New%20Products&MER=i-9b10-00002068

the pins look so small - I presume there is a machine rather than a handheld crimp that does this?

No, a regular hand tool will do crimping.

I have Engineer PA-09 and will do those wires without any problems: http://www.engineer.jp/en/products/pa09e.html

I have tried to use both these on the photo with 0 results, the little pins turn freely inside the tool, so there is no way to exert pressure in one particular way. Maybe I should but the Engineer tool, it looks better.

The left crimper starts at 1.5mm² :-) You need something like this.

+1 for Engineer PA-09. As for what you've shown in the picture... well, I'm sure they're fine for what they're made for but those are not exactly right tools for your job. Insulated connector crimper, seriously? ;) You could just as well try to use a sledgehammer on those Molexes ;)

You can get the Engineer tools at a much lower price from Rakuten in Japan.

http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/monju/item/800-pa-09/

The last order I placed was for a solder pump and a crimper, shipping to Ireland was about 4€ and took a couple of days.

Did you not get charged with (a) VAT at 20% (b) £15 "handling fee" from FedEx/UPS ?

No import duties, I don't think that's guaranteed though. No handling fees, just EMS shipping.

The Rakuten price is half the price of that eBay importer, so it's still a good deal if you need to pay additional fees.

I've been using a pair of SN-28B for a couple of years now. I imagine that they would work for the connector you're looking at, they seem the same.

They seem like a generic part number for a Chinese model of crimper so you may need to be careful to get a decent pair.

But anyway, I've done hundreds of .1" connectors now and I have no complains, they're quite nice.

Well I have ordered one, here's hoping.

Edit: Just received emails, half in Japanese, that it is on its way to me.

Unbelievable the tool has arrived today. No customs or other fees. Amazing service from Japan. Postage was expensive however, represented more than 10% of the value of the item. However I did not pay VAT (20%) or FedEx/UPS surcharges (they always send your parcel to customs, always charge you £10 or £14 "processing fees"). So in all a very good decision to buy from Japan.

:-+ I've been very happy getting tools from Rakuten.

Now waiting for a bunch of 2.5mm connectors I bought on ebay to test the tool with - 1/10 of the price on Farnell, probably not made by Molex but hey.
