XGecu T56 vs Revelprog-IS programmers?
« on: September 01, 2023, 09:14:03 pm »
I'm trying to decide between the T56 and Revelprog-IS universal programmers. I've searched and while I find plenty of information about each on it's own, as well as a decent video comparing the TL866II, T48, and T56, I've found nothing comparing the the T56 to the Revelprog.

Does anyone here have experience with both that can share some pros and cons of each? When would one work better than the other? I know the T56 has the VGA/HDMI feature but I don't expect to use that. Both have a wide assortment of adapters and clips, and both support all the major flash devices. Prices for both units are similar, although some of the Revelpro adapters can get quite pricey. Not sure that means its better for typical hobbyist/maker/repair purposes though.

Well I use the T56 :-

1. Support of oldie EPROM programming +25V high voltages not many support pre-interweb technology, on a USB Port , unless you want to use LPT.
2. Quick simple TTL/ CMOS function tester.
3. Adapters are cheaper for 32-44 pin programmer modules ATMEGA etc.
4. Updates every few months.
5. The burner program works on my bench laptop running Windows XP 32bit.

Many of the projects I have in the pipes use the SST39SF Flash chips. Looking at the Revelprog-IS compatibility list, it puts it out of the running. YMMV.

The problem is that 500mA from USB port is often not enough for those old EPROMS. I have USB programmer which supports them but asks to plug in 12V PSU which normally is not required.

I just saw a reverse engineer of a large APC UPS’s PROM from around January 2024 on renoa’s auspicious travails youtube channel. She uses the revelprog and seems happy with it. It seems it may have a feature to generate checksums/crc from just a selected area of the rom image and that may be very useful. Not sure if that feature is present in other brands.
