I also wondered about that. Would a mid-90s airframe have a nav bloc that used GLONASS? And would its fix data be in a format the data recorder understood? From what I understand, VHF navigation systems might not be accurate enough to answer the question of airspace trespass.

I would say that the mechanical designer had done excellent job as the enclosures were in good shape. Only the electrical designer had goofed. Nobody would have noticed unless the plane had not fallen...

The going theory is that during the chaotic 90-s somebody made lots of money on these by using commercial grade parts and somehow bypassing military acceptance tests.
