If The Future is Autonomous Defined Amateur Radio
« on: April 29, 2021, 12:49:56 pm »
I have seen the future,    and it's autonomous software running in a black box .
add digital modes and emerging artificial intelligence you get an autonomous software running in a black box connected to an auto tuning multi band antenna.
that automatically vacuums up contacts 24/7 , autonomously working the bands. as the owner operator sleeps
mining radio contacts like mining bitcoin 24/7.

traditionally amateur radio is implemented by radio hardware operated manually by its owner operator in a state of consciousness.
technology can now do all that autonomously.

I had this revelation when reading an article on
https://www.siliconchip.com.au/
May 2021 - Silicon Chip magazine
Feature: Digital Radio Modes – Part 2 by Dr David Maddison

I have many questions  IMO so so complicated

Does that mean "define your own mode"?

I'd like ice cream mode..   LOL..

I would love to see some kind of mesh networking discoverable protocol, kind of like Bluetooth for hams. So whenever you were in a large area you could exchange data with and possibly meet other hams.

JS8 is getting close to having auto-discovery mesh networks.  JS8 is based on FT8 (a very slow digital mode using 8-tone MFSK -- 6.25Hz tone spacing, 6.25Hz baud)

We'll search out every place a sick, twisted, solitary misfit might run to! -- I'll start with Radio Shack.

Nay, the operator will be replaced by some kind of drone; at any rate, putting together some "steampunk" style robot punching a CW key could be ... cool  ^-^

I find these automated or semi-automated digital modes useful in times of poor propagation, or simply to get an idea of the band conditions, but I get no enjoyment whatsoever about just racking up contacts. In fact, I've never maintained a logbook.

I like getting on the air, have a few good chats (whether it's phone/voice or through a full-text digital mode such as PSK31). But contacts just for the sake of contacts don't interest me, unless it's a contest such as ARRL Field Day. When there's no contest going on, I put out a CQ hoping to find someone to have a conversation with, just to get a "59 73", is rather disappointing.

To each his own.

The automated future of amateur radio was forecast and written about as far back as 1936.

See Page 11-12 of this old issue.
