kenwood ts-770e faults

Hi folks,i have a sick 770e i have just brought,here are the symptoms,on power on i get just one random didgit  show on the display,if it appearts on the r/h side of the display it will change when the vfo is rotated,the rig hears static,it has no tx output,the band buttons beep when pressed but i cant tell if it does anything,the serial number is :1010099,the radio looks clean and unmolested inside,i cant see any bad caps or anything but havent tested anything yet for esr etc,any ideas where to start?,also the tx relay clicks as it should and the volume and squelch work ok also on turn off all the display digits flash briefly,TIA.,service manual attatched
