Misnomer on two type/division wifi transmitter & receiver ?

How is it being said that two fully different division wifi transmitter (router, modem wifi, etc) and receiver (wifi adapter), but it the receiver must transmit back reply to server or other

Please explain up to giving usefulness, thanks before
