Mounting wifi router on a (metal) shed wall. Do I need backing material?

(1/1)

Ed.Kloonk:
Hi.

Subject is a plain old Linksys 54G with 2 antennae that is configured as an access point.  Previously located on a desk, now want to mount vertically on the interior wall of a large metal shed, about 6 feet high from the floor. Would like to know how to have it radiate inwards best and not be interfered by the metal wall behind it. Wall is ordinary Colorbond.

Do I need a backing material or should I just mount it and not worry about it? Router is very old and has had a hard life. If I do need to upgrade to a wireless N or even A.C someday, how might the wall that close affect the router's performance?

M0HZH:
Probably it's best to have antennas perpendicular on the wall, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It is an old slow router, you might want to upgrade to a newer one. I use a TP-Link RE305 for upstairs, it can work as a mesh / range extender, WiFi <> Ethernet bridge, DHCP server etc, does 2.4GHz  & 5GHz (AC1200) and it's quite cheap (~£20 here in the UK).

Thanks.

Yeah, it is slow. It's so old that it has a iron core tranny. It's gotta be 20 years old, and has been kept in a harsh environment continuously. I can't believe that it's still throwing punches.

I know, they were really good back in the day and they could be flashed with OpenWRT firmware. I set up one at my dad's house, ran for about 10 years without a glitch.
