Need info on this crystal oven!
« on: August 18, 2022, 02:23:29 am »
This is a small crystal oven I pulled from a junk board. I'd like to use it in a project but am unsure as to how much DC voltage to apply!
Can anybody help?

Cheers,

Corby

Typically 3.3, 5, 12, 15, or higher.
Start at 2? All the while monitoring for output signal.
Once you get signal, move up to the next typical voltage...

The unit is just an oven for a crystal. It has no output of its own.
I guess I could stick a thermistor in it and play with the voltage to find where it regulates?
Just hoping someone might no the nominal DC voltage input.

Not precisely the same model, but at least from the PCL1 family.  Looks like the standard values are 12V or 24V.  I'm surprised that they're proportional control.  I would have expected a simple thermostat.

Ed,

Not exact but thanks! I'll try 12v first and see what temperature it regulates at!

Not the right Ovenaire model, these seem to be 12V and with square wave TTL output.
https://www.datasheetarchive.com/ovenaire%20oscillators-datasheet.html

If you still have the old PCB where from the TCXO was harvested, that might give clues about the expected voltage and pinout, maybe that part of the PCB can still be powered up, so to measure the voltage.

I would start with only 5V at first, that osc look like it's from the TTL era, and TTL should withstand 5V (saying this after I've fried couple of months ago a rotating mirror scavenged from a laser printer head by powering it to +24V instead of only +12V).

Hooray!

Thanks to Ed's info I tried 12VDC and it brings the crystal up to 62 degrees C in less than 2 minutes.
It is indeed a proportional oven.
Kind of neat 70s technology.

Been a while since I have ce across one of these but IIRC the two numbers on it (15-70) indicate the rated operating voltage and the temperature. In this case I think 15V, 70C

Given that electromagnetic fields and mechanical shock are yet more axes along which oscillators' frequency can be perturbed, are there "magnetic ovens" (permanent magnet or electromagnet)

High-precision OCXO modules will often be in a steel shielded enclosure. That being said I believe the effect of magnetic fields on a crystal oscillator is extremely small so unless you've got your OCXO near some very strong magnetic fields, it's unlikely to be an issue.

"inertial ovens" (vibration dampeners) out there?

That can be addressed by mounting the OCXO module in such a way as to dampen external vibration, if that is a concern in a particular application.
