Plastic Smell Cleanup Question - Old HP Gear
« on: December 02, 2024, 06:32:20 am »
Hello all,

I have (very fortunately) come into possession of some older 20GHz HP gear, an HP 8720C and HP8431A.  Thankfully, both start up and work fine (expected output power, frequency, spectral purity, stable over time and match other known references I have).  However, both suffer from a (familiar from using other HP gear in the academic environment) issue; they seem to be outgassing some sort of sharp plastic smell when turned on, kind of like rubber.  This is particularly apparent on the HP 8720C; I would like to remedy this so I can use them at home safely, but I am hesitant to open an instrument as potentially sensitive as the 8720C unless necessary.  Perhaps others have encountered this, and have advice? (common culprits or remedies).  I am mainly worried about disturbing any ovenized oscillators that may be generating considerable heat.

Thanks in advance.

I tried a whole bunch of stuff on a old probe and I ended up selling it. LEft it out in the heat, ultrasonic cleaning, scrubbing, etc

The first thing that comes to mind for some reason is oxy clean

How about that horrible chemical smell associated with Chinese rubber like the shoe isle at Walmart or the entire Harbor Freight store? Wow, hope your HP gear isn't that bad!! Makes me wonder about sex with a Chinese rubber condom? Probably have to make love outdoors.
