Programming volatile memory boards in older Icom Rigs and radio upgrades

Hi all,

First of all, -Thank you for this thread! Without it I think I still would be pulling my (lack of) hair in frustration!

Just got a old Icom IC271E with a dead battery on the memory card. Found this thread and have spent almost two days buildning programers and testing back and forth with no luck. First I started building a N2CBU CD4040 programer but ran into trouble getting it to work with the LPT port on my XP-machine (oldest PC I have). Got the same result as many here seem to have gotten, faild to verify the code after writing. Built a Arduiono UNO adapter but no luck there either (think I have something wired wrong on my bread board adapter)

But today I finally managed to get the card programed and the old IC271 is now back in working order! 

This is how I finally did it:

- N2CDU CD4040 programer (like in the first post.)
- PC running XP
- The N2CDU program (running in DosBox-X, In DosBox-X , modify the config file with "Parallel1=Reallpt" )
- LPT port set to fixed address in Bios and bidirectional

With these setting the N2CDU programer works perfectly! 

On the IC271E I also had to hold VFO/M + CLEAR when first turning it on after I installed the board.

Hope this helps someone spend a few less hours getting their old Icom back on track!

I ended up using the Uno, it worked well for me, I programmed 3 IC745 boards, and found one was bad, and it would not program properly, I think the memory chip was bad. I sold the radio, it was working with the bad board, but I stated it would need a new board when I sold it.

you cant use xp without a special driver that give user-mode acess to the ports.

I used it with Win10 Programmed the Uno, then controlled the UNO with win10.

GiveIO is a good one, there is another simply called "UserPort"

Guess DosBox-X takes care of that, because I did not instal any drivers!?

I think on win10 the drivers were installed with the UNO software package.

Connecting via LPT in Windows 2K and higher requires a driver, as the program controls the port directly.
The DOS box appears to already contain the necessary driver.
To connect an Arduino-based programmer, the USB TO COM driver is used, and the programmer is controlled via the terminal.
