Vertical mount connector to stripline
« on: April 14, 2021, 06:41:36 am »

How do fancy compression connectors like these actually launch into stripline? Can't find any pictures of real boards, only the following illustration. Is that some kind of filled blind via? What kind of fabrication house can make boards like that?

The rear face of the connector reminds me of R&S and Keysight's Ka-band "universal" (hah) adaptors that are basically a compression fit similar to 7mm. Maybe that's what's going on here? The two faces just push together and the imperfections are good enough for K-band?

These come in two flavours. Spring loaded (more expensive) and a "dumb" variant the just presses into the trace. See:

Right, but how do you get from the surface to the stripline? I guess I could have asked about microstrip-to-stripline transitions in general - how is it done usually?

Use a via..?

Idunno, if you can't find a datasheet it's a moot point anyway you're sure as hell not going to afford to buy them, if anyone even stocks them? ;D

Well you tell yourself they're reusable so you're actually only buying once  ;D

A regular via would create a stub right? And probably one resonant at the frequencies people who buy these things would be concerned about...

(edit: FWIW, they're about $20-50 for SMA ones, depending if you want the regular or spring-loaded version)

The same people can afford blind vias.  You peasants have no imagination. ;D

I wouldn't be terribly concerned about stubs anyway, that flange isn't going to mate perfectly.  Unless there's supposed to be a gasket in there, or the face is subtly curved or something?  I didn't watch the video.

Yes, these are stupid expensive. Can't see anyone using them in anything but highest end stuff.
You get get swiss-made, tightly-specced, gold plated SMAs for less than 5 bucks. I have a hard time seeing any ROI in using these.

But hey, Amphenol is a respectable company, they must have done their homework and see a market for it. I like the board interconnect version of that connector. Stacking RF boards just 3mm apart opens up some serious packaging possibilities. Avionics and defence engineers probably drool over this.
