A ham friend of mine wanted me to do a mod for him to his FT-897. Seems that there is a 3.15A SMD fuse that serves 13.8V to the CAT connector. He can't work on SMD devices (too small) and he wanted to be able to replace the fuse again if it blows. So he wanted to install a replaceable fuse. I offered to replace the SMD fuse but he really wanted this mod installed. I agree it seems dumb to have an SMD fuse that's so hard for the average person to replace.
This mod has been done before by people, so I simply duplicated it on his radio. The replaceable fuse is simply tacked onto the pads of the SMD fuse. Now he's happy.
