Whilst on the subject of ESD, how about sharing your knowledge on TSDs (varistors and low cap zeners) etc...
)
I must be honest and say I'm not 100% sure on what is out there. I used datasheet recommended devices when designing for USB for simplicity.

I believe you want TVS diodes , they are basically high power ( in a sense ) zener diodes .
I believe they can suppress ESD , but yeah , varistors seem pretty cheap on taydaelectronics . ( Meh , looks rather wimpy )
