Hi Dave,

I'm currently working on a project as a hobby and haven't had much experience with LCD's other than your standard 16x2 with the HD44780 chipset. Im hoping to use something a bit bigger for this project but don't really know where to start.

Most reasonable sized displays for a micro-controller project seem way up in the 70$ price.. I'm really looking for something graphical but colour isn't an issue. I'm more concerned about power consumption and 'compatibility' with the PIC18Fxxx usb series.

A blog on anything you know about LCD's would be awesome and much appreciated

There are countless graphics LCD's and interfaces, so it really depends on your requirements and how much work you want to put into driving it.

The simplest solutions are the smart LCD module products like those from 4D Systems

Next easiest is probably the serial interface ones like the ones used in Nokia phones:

Yeah, sparkfun have some nice large lcds complete with controllers. So you dont need a powerful mcu to keep updating all pixels all the time.
You could slap on a small 8bit mcu and just set the pixels you want.

Check out Crystalfontz which carries UART/I2C/SPI driven LCD's, some even have keypads built in. They use packet based protocols with CRC check sums.
