Title: [ask+help] rigol MSO1104Z signal protocol decoder
Post by: e0ne199 on March 28, 2019, 10:54:48 am
hello everyone...i just want to ask something about MSO1104Z before buying it..
anyway, as far as i know MSO1104Z can decode RS232,I2C and SPI but is there any way to decode signal like RS485 or CAN bus using PC software, if the oscilloscope doesn't have firmware to do it ?
i really need to know this before buying one because i am afraid that i can't use this oscilloscope to analyze signal protocols other than what this oscilloscope is capable of....
any feedback is really appreciated

Disclaimer - my opinion only...   ...but based on owning MSO1104z-s and DS1054z

Don't buy MSO - buy DS1054Z and a separate logic analyser. Cheaper and far better.

You are right to be afraid - be very afraid.

Generaly (I don't know a scope where it's possible) a scope provide limited number of protocols decoder and it's not upgradable by the user.
One possibility is to use Sigrok (https://sigrok.org/wiki/Main_Page) to decode alot of protocols (you can write your own) : sample with Rigol (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7f3rl8zwmk).
Personally I have a Siglent SDS1104X-E and I use a DS-Logic Plus (https://www.dreamsourcelab.com/product/dslogic-plus/) (base on sigrok software) when I need more complicated or not supported protocols.

Probably, but you're better off getting one of those $6 USB logic analyzers (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=logic+analyzer+24MHz) off eBay.

You are afraid that this oscilloscope can't do what this oscilloscope can't do?
A valid concern, I'd say...  ;)

lol i mean i would be unable to analyze other signal protocols than the ones built into this oscilloscope  :)

anyway thx for the response everyone  ;D
