Rigol DS1054Z Error?
« on: April 10, 2015, 08:18:03 pm »
Hello new friends! I've been reading the forum for a while and I obtained a DS1054Z scope based on what I've read here and Dave's videos. It's a great unit, BUT...

I think I've found a minor software bug.

Doing a power calculation, CH1 x CH2.  Setting the "unit" of CH1 to A (amps) and the "unit" of CH2 to V (volts) and the Math operation to CH1xCH2, the thing automagically knows that the results should be in Watts and tells you the vertical scale and offset correctly in Watts. But then when Measurement Source is set to Math, to make the measurements menu on the left side screen use the Math trace... the units come up in whatever you have selected for CH1, NOT the correct "Watts". See the scopeshot below. This also happens to the "All Measurements" table, when Math is selected as the source. It gives the vertical units in whatever you have set for CH1, not the correct "W" but in my case "A".

See the screenshot below. So, it's a minor annoyance but maybe it should be confirmed by the "big guns" here... Dave, what do you think? Can you get Rigol to put this problem (if confirmed) on the list for the next firmware revision?

To use the Amps unit of measurement, you'd need to be measuring across a shunt or using a current probe, are you ?
This is a Power analysis type measurement and timing Skew between inputs must also be "nulled" for accurate measurement.

Yes, thank you, I am measuring the Vdrop across a 1 ohm CVR, with the same probe type as I am using for the V measurement, so there should be no skew issue. I'm new to the forum, but not new to electronics or oscilloscopes!

But that's not the issue here though! I am talking about the scope not correctly passing the "W" parameter _name_ to the Measurements! Even though it correctly changes the vertical scale and offset of the Math trace automatically to Watts when it is being fed "Amps" and "Volts" _names_ for the units in an AxB computation!

The scope only knows what I tell it. If I tell it that one channel is measuring Amps and the other one is measuring Volts, then the result of the AxB math should be in Watts, and it is, except in the locations I have noted: the Measurements, whether from the menu on the left side of the screen (source set to MATH of course) or in the "All Measurements" table. What I am _actually_ feeding to the channels makes no difference, the scope has to take my word for it.

ETA: Here's the "All Measurements" table, showing units "A" where it should be showing "W" :
