Adding external AM and FM modulation
« on: September 28, 2015, 04:44:18 pm »

I am used to using sig gens that have built in, internal modulation. Is there a way to externally modulate with this sig gen? If so, what would the test set up look like? The input port is part of the frequency counter function as far as I am aware so I think id need to externally modulate on a breadboard or something.

Daniel,

I have this generator and have experimented with it.  You could add AM modulation by using for example an Analog device AD734AN 4 quadrant analog multiplier IC on an extra board added inside.  The FY3200 series has plenty of room inside for an extra circuit board and more than likely plenty of power from the +/-12V internal supply.

However, without interfacing into and changing the FPGA code you won't be able to do FM modulation.

Thank you for the chip recommendation.  I pulled up the datasheet and it seems like a very capable chip. If I am only interested in 1khz AM signal, would there be an easier implementation?  I am on board with creating a custom board to add inside the unit with a pushbutton switch to turn on this specific modulation requirement.
