What to do?
« on: December 22, 2013, 08:52:19 pm »
Well, the VSWR Software on my Rigol DSA815 TG Spectrum Analyzer was installed but it was only temporary. It ran out, now I have to make a decision. :palm:

1. Buy the software $459
2. Buy the package (software, VB 1020 VSWR BRIDGE) $599

Is there any way to use a VSWR Bridge without the software?

Tnx Gary

You might read some of the Rigol threads here for additional options.....

Hi Gary,
of course you can use a VSWR Bridge without the option and without doing a illegal hack.
Use TG manually, do normalisation, and calculate the value manually. There is a app.note on Rigolna.com available, it
refers to DSA1000 but work also for DSA815.

helps?

Yes! If you do not mind to do some math yourself you can use your spectrum analyzer to measure the amplitude of the reflected power, and if you have the TG output power  stored in a memory you can subtract this and show the amount of reflected power vs. output. No need to have special software.

Still you may enable all features including the non official 10 Hz RBW... just read the mega-threadhttps://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/sniffing-the-rigol%27s-internal-i2c-bus/855/
It's all up to you :D

I  watched a lot of James Eagleson's videos (thanks James) and it seems that the VSWR software eliminates the need for the Return Loss chart. So if this the case, why spend a lot of money on that software?

Thanks for the comments.
