Can you ID these (Fluke?) test probes?
« on: May 04, 2012, 11:39:13 am »
Hi

I just acquired a Fluke 87v second-hand but new (boxed, manual still shrink-wrapped, all paperwork, CD, etc) in the UK. It came with a sealed bag containing a Fluke-branded thermocouple and the probes/clips in the pictures below. The probes have a sprung-loaded retracting shroud, and they unscrew to reveal a 500mA fuse. You can replace the probe with a gnarly-looking alligator clip, or you can slide a (Fluke-branded) small alligator clip over the probe. The probes themselves have no model number/branding.

My question is - what model number are these probes? I asked Fluke UK what probes were being shipped with 87v/EUR meters, and they couldn't give me a sensible answer. I'm planning on selling them - they're as much use to me as a crowbar for mending watches - but I'd like to give them a proper name.

Cheers
John

I don't know what the model number of those test leads are but the look very useful to me.

I think only the shrouded alligator clip is from fluke, the rest doesn't seem to have the right color and general quality that fluke uses.

Looks like TLK291 fused probes.  Never actually seen those before.  Grainger says country of origin is China. That may explain the "look."  The small clips are regular old AC72.

Yes! They look very similar to mine, except mine are on a regular lead with a conventional 90deg shrouded 4mm plug. Thanks.

Interesting design. I've only seen the big fat fused probes before. FTPL or something like that.

Does the shroud around the tip slide back somehow?

Yes, they're sprung-loaded and just telescope back into the body of the probe.

Having had a poke around on the Internet, it seems the UK has this guidance http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/gs38.pdf which recommends the use of probes of this type, which presumably explains Fluke substituting them in this country.
