Title: Adjustable AC load
Post by: Jester on March 04, 2017, 02:26:35 pm
My present AC load is a pretty crude home-made gizmo with a 100W pot and various bulbs and heaters (see image below). It has served the purpose but is far from ideal. Google search for AC loads does not show much other than the big industrial typically 1500W and up loads.

Most of the time I just need a variable 0-100W load that is used in the 10-250Vac range (50-60Hz). Does anyone know of any products in the 100W range?

If not does anyone have suggestions for an an active circuits that would be suitable?

Google search led to this circuit:

Perhaps this circuit with 600V FET's and a BIG heatsink might do the job?

Another way which might be suitable is to put a heavy heat sinked resistive load onto the output of a variac.  Then you can adjust the variac to adjust the load.
