Advantest u3772 password for maintenance mode
« on: August 06, 2020, 11:06:15 am »
Hi,

I have a problem with the Advantest U3772 Spectrum analyzer and I need a password to go into the calibration menu. Can anyone know the password for maintenance mode of this instrument. I also tried to find it in a cf card (this is linux based software), but i did not have luck. I also try to contact Advantest, but they dont want to help me (It is very disappointing).

Also I have an old instrument R3271A and Advantest don't want to share with me the service manual. I think that this will be my last Advantest instrument, and in future I will buy only old HP/Agilent for my home lab.

Try the simple ones:

000
0000
00000

123
1234
12345

11111
etc

Most often people don't want to set a password, but are forced to, so they do whatever.

I try it before. But this is not user password, it is factory set password for maintenance menu.

Ah, apologies.

Searching the CF card further is probably your last bet.  If it's hard-coded then it will be inside an executable, the "strings" commandline utility may help you + grepping for a series of 0-9 digits.

I did not have luck to find it. I find only the symbol "1checkMaintPassword(const QString &)", but don't have luck to find a password.I was trying to start an app in some similar linux environment (to try to debug), but got an error (cannot find /dev/fram). This is a QT linux desktop app.

/dev/fram sounds like non-volatile hardware storage.  ie a few kb of flash on the board.

If the app is accessing it then it sounds like important stuff is stored there.  At a guess: calibration data + passwords :P  But that's only a guess.

Is there any way you could cat /dev/fram > file on the equipment?  If the program only uses normal reading & writing syscalls to /dev/fram then you can probably just create /dev/fram as an ordinary file on your test linux setup.  Regardless: you will want to look inside your device's fram with a hex editor to see if it stores anything useful.

I should add a disclaimer at this point: I assume you actually own this machine and are not renting it or otherwise have it under some support contract.  It looks like this model is EOL so it's probably a safe guess, and if the company won't give you a password for an EOL machine that you own so you can calibrate/repair/etc it then that's just evil.

Yes, fram is maybe small eeprom on board.
This is an analyzer of my friend. He doesn't live near me, and he only sends me cf card images. In case that Analyzer is here, I will log to linux and debug/crack. But without instruments I only have files to try to find a pass.

Also calibration data is on cf card + user password (on another "/data" partition).
