Agilent 54600A oscilloscope - EPROM Firmware needed
« on: October 09, 2021, 06:02:15 pm »
Hi Folks!!

I received this ocilloscope as a gift by free, unfortunately it isn't working. I've already have a 500Mhz 54610A, then I guess this would be a good exercise to refurbish mine later.
The scope is in excellent condition, it came from a telco's lab.

After power up no fire and no smoke (fine!), and also no image at all. As an usual tvs repairman I didn't worry and go ahead.
At first I checked the psu and voltages are fine. I'll not recap anything until it will be in working condition.

I checked then crt board and all voltages seems to be ok, the filament is on but video dc voltage was blocking the image. I turn right sub-bright and some image comes. Deflection is ok in both axes but thre isn't any image, just horizontal retrace lines.
Well, then I started to worry a bit, and checked ribbons.
After that and when I took a new detailed review of the main board I took notice there was a missed IC, U42 wich is the EPROM program IC.

Well, I didn't expect that! I can't know if it was lost during some repair task or if someone scrapped it....anyway I need to replace it to go ahead.

Looking at the schematic and also some pics I could check it's a 27C2048.
Then I just need to program it, but I googled a long time without succes. Just could get a 54602A one, and I don't believe that could work.

Why I wrote all this and not to ask directly for the file? I guess it's always useful to explain what we did and to get others as much info as could be possible. In this case I should visually checked deeply before do anything, also under the ribbon wires!!

Well, I'll appreciate  if someone could send me a dump of this eprom.

Thanks in advance!

Carlos

I've been looking for an updated ROM for my 54600A, I have v. 2.0, but need at least 2.2 to use some of the expansion modules.

Attached is v. 2.0, HP Part number 54600-80005.

Here are some notes I found elsewhere on the web:

The final 54600A ROM version was 3.2.
The upgrade kit was 54601-68702.
The ROMs were part number 54600-80013

Thanks,

-Jason

Just in case you haven't found it yet, and for the future when others find this thread looking for the same:

K04BB has FW Part Number 54600-8000812 in a .zip archive here:

http://www.ko4bb.com/getsimple/index.php?id=download&file=HP_Agilent/HP_54602AB_Firmware_ROM_images_EPROM_54600-8000812-29.zip

That high a part number suggests that it may still be System 3.x; but it should still be at least System 2.3 which I have on my 54600A. This note from the 54657A/54658A documentation states:

Quote
Oscilloscope Compatibility

54657A and 54658A These modules are compatible with all Agilent 54600-series oscilloscopes except 54600A, 54601A, and 54602A oscilloscopes with an operating system version lower than 2.2. If your 54600A, 54601A, or 54602A oscilloscope has an earlier operating system, it can be updated using upgrade kit HP part number 54601-68702.

So for future reference, this ROM should be valid for 54600A, 54601A, or 54602A model oscilloscopes.

Cheers!
