Title: Agilent/Keysight AutoProbe 1 Replacement Pins
Post by: Weston on October 20, 2021, 06:46:10 am
I am helping out with a student power electronics lab and I have found that a large number of the current probes using the Agilent/Keysight AutoProbe 1 interface due not work due to damaged pins. I was hoping to replace the damaged pins and restore the probe functionality.

Has anyone ever identified the type of pogo pin that the Autprobe 1 interface uses and found a replacement? This is the interface used for most Agilent active probes: https://prc.keysight.com/Content/ProbeInterfaces.html

I searched for old forum posts and was surprised when I did not find any info on this. The pins are easily damaged, so it seems like it should be a pretty common problem.

Those are most likely Keysight proprietary pins.
I would contact Keysight and ask, if these pins are available for sale.

Did you check pogo pins?

Shariar did a teardown of one of these probes. These were standard 100mil pogo pins.

As a very late update, I have tracked down an exact replacement pogo pin and have confirmed it works!

https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Smiths-Interconnect-IDI/S-2-J-4-G?qs=Uzd%2Fwh%252BZzhCupKIOd%2F7fvQ%3D%3D (https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Smiths-Interconnect-IDI/S-2-J-4-G?qs=Uzd%2Fwh%252BZzhCupKIOd%2F7fvQ%3D%3D)

Also, if the pogo pin gets pushed in all the way it can be impossible to remove with pliers. I have discovered you can effectively bond a small wire (30AWG wire bond wire works best) to the tip of the pogo pin and pull it out by capacitively spot welding a wire to the tip with a ~60V lab power supply. If you take apart the probe connector you can remove the whole pogo pin assembly and make a connection to the back side with an alligator clip.

Depending on how they get stuck, you might want to use shorter or longer pins, with higher or lower force. There are other manufacturers out there beside IDI - Mill-max, QM Tech, Ingun and few others.

Nice to know, that you got it to work.
