Alternatives to HP 6652A Power Supply????.......

I need a higher current power supply for an upcoming job. 

Minimum requirements are 12V and 20A. (Preferably closer to the 6652A 20V, 25A though)
The application will be switching from ~mA to a max of about 20A load with a high side switch on the board, so the supply needs to handle load transients.  The pulse on time could be anywhere from 10ms to many seconds.

I'm looking at a HP 6652A, but before I commit to this particular boat anchor I figured I'd see what you guys think would be other options in the used price/performance range.  New would be great but if we are talking thousands of dollars I'll just get the 6652A.

I'd look at the power supplies from Gophert or Rek. Gophert CPS-3630 could be a suitable option.

Avoid anything from the Multicomp brand. You can buy the same piece of equipment from Aliexpress for much less.

I wonder how bad the combination of switching supply, electronic load, and 20A current transients will be on the system.  Stability issues?  That was my first thought on the linear boat anchor.  It would more closely represent the battery that the final system will end up running on.

The 6652A is a switching PSU. It is heavy (30kg) because the casing is made using lots of steel. There are 500W and 2kW versions of these supplies. The output has a boatload of capacitors to stabilise the regulation and deal with load transients. I have the 6672A (2kW 20V / 100A) model.

True.  There is also a serious step down transformer in the HP supplies, but you are right it's probably more about the output capacitance.  I guess that still applies though to the smaller units that don't look like they have the size to support nearly as much capacitance.  I wonder what the primary step down method is.  Flyback maybe?

Korad can be bought from local suppliers for competitive prices. So yes, you won't find their product much cheaper elsewhere

I have 6652A in operation, this is a linear power supply, the 2KW versions I have are switching power supplies.
