Source for replacement piezo buzzer? (Fluke 117)
« on: May 12, 2016, 05:31:02 pm »
Piezo died in Fluke 117.

Where can I source a replacement piezo buzzer? Fluke no help.

Cheers.

There doesn't seem to be a Fluke part number, so I suggest going to digikey/mouser and trying a few different versions.

BTW, I saw your post about a DMM with a loud beeper

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/what's-a-handheld-dmm-with-a-loud-beeper/

This may be an opportunity to try different buzzers in the 117 to find a really loud one?

I don't know about Fluke but it most meters I've taken apart, the buzzer is just a piezo disc transducer which is externally driven by an oscillator or MCU IO pin on the main board.

It's unlikely it's the piezo which has failed because there really isn't anything to fail. It's far more likely a wire has become detached from either the piezo or the PCB.

buy a "passive piezo buzzer"
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-X-DC-3-24V-Black-Piezo-Electronic-Tone-Buzzer-Alarm-Continuous-Beep-DB-/201434092339
you might need to mod the housing though...get your dremil ready (cut the buzzer's housing not the meter's)

In some FLUKEĀ“s there are two springs mounted on PCB making the contact to the piezo disc. I had one FLUKE 177 with faulty buzzer, but it was just the springs that got mis-aligned to the disc  :) puh!

The buzzers linked to in your post are unsuitable as a replacement for the piezo transducer in a meter because they have a built-in oscillator. You need a piezo transducer without a built-in oscillator.

but I've linked passive peizo...IE without any circuitry just the peizo disk inside of plastic housing.... besides... he can desolder with ease

'continuous beep'. That ain't a bare piezo.

You need a bare piezo transducer, like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Piezo-Transducer-Sound-Discs-YOU-CHOOSE-SIZE-Drum-Trigger-Guitar-Pickup-/121253903935?var=&hash=item1c3b4bbe3f:m:mFyEDs70E0LLsV_harzYKeg

Note that they come in a variety of sizes, so make sure you get the right one.

Peizo disc transducers fairly common. Most component shops sell them and failing that, cheap toys and musical greetings normally contain one.
